Treasures of Kyoto – Three Centuries of Rinpa Creation

The Rinpa decorative approach characterizes one of the major Japanese painting schools. This exhibition provides an introduction to this way of painting with some sixty works, including the “National Treasure” entitled Gods of Wind and Thunder.

This presentation is part of the Japonismes 2018: les âmes en résonance (Japonisms 2019: Souls in Resonance) program and offers an exceptional opportunity to discover Gods of Wind and Rain by S-oatsu, a national treasure which is kept in the Kennin-ji temple of Kyoto and can be seen only on very rare occasions.

This event has special impact in the context of the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and France.

Over sixty works are presented along a chronological pathway divided into four parts corresponding to the different generations of artists belonging to the Rinpa school.

Because of their fragility, these works are shown in an evolving presentation that includes four major rotations during the exhibition.

During the largest rotation, from Monday to Friday, December 10 to 14, the exhibition will be closed to the public.

  • Exhibition opening on October 26
  • Rotation 1: November 26
  • Rotation 2: 10-14 December (museum closed)
  • Rotation 3: December 31

This exhibition is organized jointly by the Cernuschi Museum-Paris Musées, the Foundation of Japan, the National Museum of Modern Art and the Hosomi Museum of Kyoto.
