Couture in black – designs by Cristóbal Balenciaga
A tribute to Cristobal Balenciaga (1895–1972), this exhibition unveils the work of the celebrated “couturier of couturiers” through the prism of his favored color. His inspirations were multiple: black, color of the folklore and traditions of his Spanish childhood; black, the refined taste of this extraordinary technician who revolutionized the feminine silhouette; black, the monastic inspiration of the master of whom Dior said: “The garment was his religion.” An alchemist of couture, he made black a vibrant and living matter. Laces, embroidery, silk velvets, satin and pearls become skirts, suits, cocktail dresses, capes and accessories whose sumptuousness will undoubtedly amaze visitors to the exhibition.
An adaptation of the exhibition Balenciaga in Black from Palais Galliera, presented in Paris from 8 March to 16 July 2017.
