A Tear for a Drop of Water

Notre-Dame de Paris( The Hunchback of Notre Dame) VI, IV

The Hunchback of Notre Dame was an unrivalled source of illustrations for artists in the nineteenth century. The tragicomic depiction of Quasimodo being pilloried was a great success in particular. Tony Johannot provided the archetype, used by Luc-Olivier Merson in his painting A Tear for a Drop of Water which was commissioned for the opening of the Victor Hugo House in 1903.
