Zadkine: the Instinct of Matter

For Zadkine, matter has a rich dynamic that makes it a “formal power”. The exhibition looks at this intimate link, this organic dialog between the artist and primordial matter.

On the 130th anniversary of the artist’s birth, the Zadkine Museum pays him tribute by highlighting the special link between the artist and matter.

After Être Pierre (Being Stone) in 2017, the exhibition Ossip Zadkine: the Instinct of Matter enables visitors to get an idea of Zadkine’s organic dialog with various materials, which became for him “formal powers”.

On this occasion, the museum benefits from exceptional loans like Le Fauve (The Beast) from the Grenoble Museum and the very beautiful series of graphic works from the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris.

The power and instinct of matter

For this Russian artist (Vitebsk 1888 – Paris 1967), material is always “raw”. He knows and feels that it carries form within.

The exhibition traces this intimate link to primordial matter, to the gestation of shapes in knots of wood, in the density and particular nature of stone, in the fluidity of ink or gouache. Matter is “instructive” and emanates a dynamic, a force that the chisel of the sculptor or the hand of the draftsman must capture in return.
