Derain, Balthus, Giacometti: An Artistic Friendship

Fondation Mapfre, Madrid
An exhibition from the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, presented at the Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid from 31 January to 5 May 2018.

Featuring close to 200 works, the exhibition retraces the important moments in the artistic friendship between three major artists of the 20th century, Derain (1880-1954), Balthus (1908-2001) and Giacometti (1901-1966). Far beyond mutual admiration and the real affection for each other they expressed throughout their lives, they were bound by a profound aesthetic commonality. A chronological and thematic display shows their big landscapes and still lifes, as well as points in common: actors, collectors, friends, gallery owners, and models. A large sequence focuses on their post-war works which reveal the doubts and obsessions of a faltering world.
